Trio of area gymnasts headed to state
With a powerhouse like Roseville in your section, there isn't much room for competitors from other teams to shine but a pair of gymnasts from District 621 managed to grab a few pieces of glory.
Irondale's Jordana Brady and Mounds View's Nikki Birr secured spots in Saturday's Class AA individual state gymnastics competition.
Brady, a junior, qualified for state in two events, the vault and the floor exercise. She qualified for the vault by finishing second in the event at the Section 5AA meet last Wednesday. Her fourth-place finish on the floor exercise gave her a second state event.
Birr, a senior, is headed to the state meet for the second consecutive year. She qualified this year on the floor exercise by finishing third.
The aforementioned Roseville squad easily captured the section team title, its eighth in a row, with a score of 150.95, the highest in the state this year. Of the 20 individual state slots up grabs at the section meet, Roseville captured 16.
The Class AA state gymnastics meet runs Friday and Saturday at the University of Minnesota's Sports Pavilion. Competition begins each night at 6 p.m. with team competition going on Friday and the individual meet on Saturday.
Eighth-grader Kia Kivi will represent the St. Anthony Village High School gymnastics team at the state meet this week. Kivi won the Section 4A all-around title last week to advance to state.
Kivi posted a season-best all-around score of 36.025 to win the section crown. She also took first place on the uneven bars and was top four in the other three events.
As a team, St. Anthony finished fourth at sections with a score of 128.275.
