Girls Cross Country: Pioneers return with strong senior leadership

The Hill-Murray High School girls cross country team finished fourth in the Classic Suburban Conference a year ago and is looking at moving up in the standings this season.

There are a couple of very good reasons for optimism. Coach Tim Ryan cited a pair of seniors who will be leaders as captains.

Anna Maurer was All-Conference a year ago and was named the CSC Runner of the Year. She finished 10th in the state meet and garnered All-State honors.

The other Hill-Murray captain is Rachel Ogren. She was the No. 3 runner on the Hill-Murray roster a year ago.

“We have a strong senior leadership with an excellent work ethic,” Ryan stated. “Also we have back two-year performer Johnna Patterson. She was an All-Conference Honorable Mention runner the past two years. Our senor leadership, in addition to Maurer, includes Rachel Ogren, Ally Cochran and Liz Newton.”

If the Pioneers have a problem, Ryan said, “We don’t have a lot of depth when it comes to varsity experience. We will be young, but this is a group of very enthusiastic girls.”

Assisting Ryan will be coach Cheri Gerenz.

Other notables to the Hill-Murray squad include junior Lexi Adamsky, along with a pair of promising eighth-graders -- Emma Mendez and Morgan Johnson.

During the 35 years he has coached the Pioneers, Ryan’s girls teams have won eight conference titles and had 46 individual All-Conference runners.

He looked at the CSC for possible leaders and predicted North and Mahtomedi would be strong contenders for the title.

To date, the 2013 Hill-Murray girls cross country schedule is:
