Beacons no longer on an island
Going into its week-three game last week, the Concordia Academy football team was the only unbeaten squad in the Tri-Metro East Conference. The Beacons’ trip to Nicollet Island in Minneapolis on Friday changed that.
DeLaSalle High School, the main tenant of Nicollet Island, welcomed Concordia to its home field but was anything but an accommodating host. The Islanders ended the Beacons’ win streak with a 46-13 victory.
DeLaSalle scored early and often as it led by 14 after one quarter and by 34 at halftime. The Islanders added two more scores in the third quarter before Concordia closed out the scoring with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns.
Roger Moore Jr. put up the Beacons’ first points of the game on a 15-yard touchdown run and Concordia also added a defensive touchdown on a 40-yard fumble return by Berhane Hanson.
Prior to facing DeLaSalle, Concordia Academy’s record was unblemished thanks to victories over Breck in week one and Providence Academy in week two.
The Beacons will try to return to their winning ways this week when New Life Academy pays a visit on Friday. The game is part of homecoming-week festivities for Concordia.
New Life Academy enters the contest with no momentum after having started the season 0-3. Two of those losses came against teams Concordia has already beaten this season (Breck, Providence Academy) while the other came against Minnehaha Academy.
