Development of scorers key for Concordia Academy GBB

Most of the pieces appear to be in place for the Concordia Academy girls basketball team this season. From solid defenders to tenacious rebounders, the Beacons have a lineup full of athletic players with basketball smarts.

The one thing on head coach Amy Bellus’ wish list at the beginning of the season is a proven scorer to compliment Michala Walther.

“We will need to find some consistent outside shooters,” said Bellus, who is in her third year as the Beacons’ head coach.

Walther, a junior guard, averaged better than 15 points per game a year ago to go along with four rebounds and three steals a game. Bellus described Walther as “long, quick, can get her shot off quickly.”

Among the candidates who Bellus feels can evolve into scoring threats are senior center Megan Fallert and senior guard Cassandra Adams. Fallert is an athletic shot blocker and Adams is a high-energy defender who averaged almost three steals a game. Bellus said Fallert “will have to become a more consistent scorer this year” while Adams “will need to score for us to be successful this year.”

Another returning player to watch is senior forward Kristen Stude, who is back after missing last season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. She provides solid defense and rebounding and general toughness.

Newcomers who Bellus expects to contribute include freshman forward Anika Neuman, a six-footer who possesses a solid jump shot, and sophomore guard Clara Paul, who can handle the ball and play defense.

Last year’s team went 13-14 and recorded victories over Class AAAA teams North St. Paul and Minneapolis South. Bellus would like to see that win total increase by 3-5 victories, have her team finish in the top third of the Tri-Metro Conference and compete for a section title.

Bellus expects DeLaSalle and Minnehaha Academy to lead the way in the Tri-Metro and be followed closely by St. Croix Lutheran and Providence Academy.

Concordia Academy opens the season this week with a pair of non-conference home games against Minneapolis Edison on Tuesday and St. Paul Johnson on Thursday. Next week, the Beacons hit the road for their conference opener on Dec. 9 at Providence Academy and another non-conference tilt at Fridley on Dec. 13.
