Bev Scalze receives MASWCD Legislator of the Year Award

Senator Bev Scalze received the Minnesota Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts (MASWCD) 2013 Legislator of the Year Award. The award is in recognition to Sen. Scalze’s outstanding accomplishments in promoting natural resources conservation.

Sen. Scalze was instrumental in securing funding in the 2013 Clean Water Bill to study the problem of aquifer depletion in the northeastern metro area. This depletion has hurt area lakes and is thought to have occurred through increased and unsustainable well drilling and water pumping.

In 2013, Sen. Scalze passed important legislation to prohibit the use of coal tar in our state because of its carcinogenic effluent on our ground water. The legislation will help reduce the amount of hazardous materials in storm water retention ponds in Minnesota.

Sen. Scalze also passed legislation last session extending the sunset date of the Metropolitan Area Water Supply Advisory Committee to help address continued and emerging water supply issues. Sen. Scalze understands that Minnesota’s drinking water supply is integral to our communities’ economic growth. As new issues emerge, it is important to have a well-informed committee to understand the problem and recommend good solutions.
