A 2014 prescription

The Citizens Emergency Response Team (CERT) members are neither professional law enforcement officers, nor are they trained firefighters. They are first responders without credentials. They are citizens who are trained to respond in a limited capacity if bad things should happen. They are generally under the local law enforcement entity. Ours is under the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Department. The training is similar throughout the nation. It is taught by professionals in areas of likely need if that need arises.

It was my responsibility as a chaplain for several years in the areas of preparing, reacting and recovery. My prescribed curriculum included the physical, mental and emotional areas. We had some leeway as to how we taught the subject matter. I always included the concept that the mental and emotional areas can be enhanced by integrating our spiritual values in these areas of preparation. This encourages physical fitness, informational learning, attitude preparation and spiritual consideration. We invited the candidates to play out the nine half day training sessions over time and again in their minds.

A worthwhile prescription for our 2014 lives could be to follow the CERT training concept. No, we would not be covering the same materials. We would be thinking and preparing for what we might expect to happen this coming year. Healthy eating habits, some physical exercises, and a positive attitude make a good start. It takes effort to keep ourselves informed in those areas important to our lives. These can all be enhanced by including our spiritual activities.

For the 2013 club, Dec. 31 brings us to Malachi 4 and Revelation 22.

Have a Merry Christmas and a great 2014.
