2014 tax levy, budget approved in Shoreview

The Shoreview City Council approved the city’s final 2014 budget and property tax levy at its Monday, Dec. 16 city council meeting.

Next year’s general fund operating budget of $9.1 million was set along with a levy of just over $10 million. The 2014 levy represents a 3.4 percent increase of $330,000 over 2013.

Shoreview’s Finance Director Jeanne Haapala said the median market value of a single-family home in the city increased by 1 percent from this time last year to $224,500, according to Ramsey County’s assessment used for tax purposes.

This year marks the first time median home values have risen in Shoreview overall in five years. Based on the middle value, a homeowner can expect to pay around $20 more in the city’s portion of property taxes next year, Haapala said.

According to data obtained from Ramsey County and the city of Shoreview, the city’s portion of property taxes accounts for 23 percent of the 2014 tax bill on a median valued home in the city. The total tax bill next year, on a home valued at $224,500, will be approximately $3,399, and the city’s share of that is about $778.
