Roseville’s Stecklein an Olympian

Lee Stecklein has played at the top levels for most of her hockey career and next month she’ll take another step up that ladder. Stecklein, a Roseville native and Roseville Area High School graduate, is headed to Sochi, Russia, as a member of the United States women’s hockey team.

Stecklein is the youngest member of Team USA, which is expected to battle Canada for the gold medal.

Over the years, Stecklein has always been at the top of her level of hockey. While at RAHS, Stecklein helped the Raiders win the 2010 Class AA state championship and also played in the state finals in 2012.

She also missed some of Roseville’s games around Jan. 1 for two straight years while playing for Team USA in the U18 world championships.

After graduating from Roseville in 2012, Stecklein took her game to the University of Minnesota and helped the Golden Gophers women’s hockey team go undefeated and win the 2013 NCAA championship.

The day after winning the NCAA title, Stecklein flew to a national team camp to begin her quest of a spot in the Olympics.

The women’s Olympic hockey team was revealed on Jan. 1 at the Winter Classic in Ann Arbor, Mich. Stecklein, wearing sweater No. 2, was the first player introduced.

In order to help the Stecklein family get to Sochi to watch Lee, some fundraisers have been set up. Those wishing to help offset some of the family’s travel costs can dine at the Roseville Davanni’s on Jan. 13 and/or the Roseville Applebees on Jan. 15. Mention ‘Roseville to Sochi’ and a portion of the amount spent will be donated to the family.

In addition, there will be t-shirt sales at the Roseville Skating Center on Jan. 17 from 5-9 p.m. and Saturday from 1-9 p.m.

Other fundraising opportunities are also being set up. Watch for future announcements.
