SEC girls hockey race comes down to final week
The Mounds View High School girls hockey team has been in the thick of the Suburban East Conference race all season and it appears that the championship won’t be decided until the final day of the regular season.
Despite suffering a conference loss last week, the Mustangs are tied for first with Stillwater with two games to play. Cretin-Derham Hall, one point behind in third place, also still has a shot at the title.
Mounds View dropped a 3-1 decision to East Ridge on Saturday afternoon to drop into a tie with Stillwater. The Ponies won twice last week, including a big victory over Cretin to drop the Raiders to third place.
Based on the conference standings, it would appear that Mounds View has the most favorable schedule with the sixth and seventh-place teams on the docket this week. The Mustangs play at sixth-place Hastings on Tuesday and host seventh-place White Bear Lake on Saturday afternoon.
The flaw in the argument about Mounds View having the easier week is that regardless of where White Bear is in the standings, the Bears always play Mounds View tough. A year ago, Mounds View lost only once en route to the conference championship but that one loss came against White Bear, which also eked out a tie against the Mustangs last season.
In their first meeting this season, Mounds View and White Bear Lake skated to a scoreless tie.
Stillwater’s final week includes a home game against last-place Woodbury on Tuesday and a trip to fourth-place Roseville on Friday. Cretin plays at fifth-place East Ridge on Tuesday and ninth-place Park-Cottage Grove on Saturday.
