Mounds View girls headed to state Alpine meet
Finishing second usually means coming up just shy of your goal. That wasn’t the case for the Mounds View High School girls Alpine ski team last week at the section meet, however.
The Mustangs ended up second in the team standings at the Section 7 meet but that won’t keep them from competing in this week’s state meet. There are only four sections for Alpine skiing and the top two teams in each section advance to state.
Only Mahtomedi was better than Mounds View on Feb. 4 at Giants Ridge in Biwabik. The Zephyrs piled up 365 points to Mounds View’s 356. Mahtomedi’s top four skiers finished seventh, eighth, 14th and 38th while Mounds View’s four best took second, fourth, 23rd and 47th.
Sophomore Juliana Damberg led the Mustangs by finishing second overall with a combined time of 1:17.98. She posted the second-best times on both runs, finishing behind only Hermantown’s Madison Danelski and her combined time of 1:16.11.
Sophomore Emily Nash was Mounds View’s second-best performer on the day and she finished fourth overall with a time of 1:19.78. She had the fourth-best times on both runs.
Rounding out Mounds View’s top four were senior Madeline Bratager, who finished 23rd, and junior Hana Gulli, who took 47th. Also competing in the section meet for the Mustangs were senior Cortney Kosiak (51st) and junior Sarah Mackay (79th).
For Mounds View as a team, this will be the third consecutive year it has qualified for the state meet. All six members of this year’s team also competed at state last year.
Damberg has the most state-meet experience. This is her fourth trip to the state meet. She qualified as an individual as a seventh-grader in 2011 and went to state with the team in 2012 and 2013. Her highest individual finish at state is 14th place, which she accomplished in 2012 and 2013.
Nash is making her third trip to state. She finished 45th in 2012 and 23rd last year. Bratager, Gulli, Kosiak and Mackay are going to state for the second time.
As a team, Mounds View finished fourth at state in 2012 and fifth last year.
Irondale also competed at the section meet and finished 17th. The Knights’ top performer was senior Maggie Jahnke, who finished 37th overall.
The state meet is Wednesday at Giants Ridge starting at 10 a.m.
On the boys side, Mounds View finished ninth and Irondale was 14th.
Mounds View’s top skier was freshman Wyatt Bieber, who finished 24th.
Leading the way for Irondale was junior Sam Peterson, who ended up 35th overall.
