Mustangs, Knights face tough playoff openers
Getting out of the first round of the Section 4AA playoffs will be no easy task for the Irondale/St. Anthony Village and Mounds View boys hockey teams. Both face higher-seeded foes in Saturday’s quarterfinals at Aldrich Arena.
Irondale/St. Anthony Village
The Knights are seeded eighth and get to face top-seeded and third-ranked Hill-Murray at 11 a.m.
Irondale won just three games this season but was able to win its final North Suburban Conference game. The Knights picked up win No. 3 on Saturday by beating Robbinsdale Cooper 3-1.
Josh Loken scored a pair of goals for Irondale in the Cooper victory. Kilen Eilefson scored the other. Drew Schenkenberg made 21 saves to pick up the victory in goal.
Irondale closes out the regular season on Tuesday with a 4 p.m. game at Tartan. It’s a make-up game from Jan. 28, one of those bitterly cold days when many school districts were closed.
The fifth-seeded Mustangs drew fourth-seeded Roseville and take on the Raiders at 7 p.m. Mounds View dropped both of its meetings with Roseville this season, losing 3-2 on Dec. 12 and 6-3 on Dec. 26.
About a month ago it appeared Mounds View might be on to something as it was in the middle of a stretch that saw it win six of seven games. February turned out to be unkind, however, as the Mustangs won just one of their final seven contests.
The Roseville/Mounds View winner advances to next week’s semifinals at the State Fair Coliseum and a match-up, most likely, against top-seeded Hill-Murray.
