Trevino to appeal murder conviction, sentence

Jeffery Trevino

Nearly a year after his wife was last seen alive, East Side resident Jeffery Trevino is appealing a judge’s decision that will have him behind bars for the next 27 years if not overturned.

A jury convicted Trevino, 40, of St. Paul of second-degree unintentional murder for killing his wife, Kira Steger, 30, in February 2013. Ramsey County Judge Leonardo Castro in November sentenced him to 27.5 years in prison.

Trevino filed the notice of appeal on Thursday, Feb. 13, with Ramsey County.

His 330-month sentence is an upward departure from state sentencing guidelines due to aggravating factors that Castro determined were present including concealing Steger’s body.

At the sentencing hearing Nov. 25, Steger’s family provided testimony of their anguish following Kira’s disappearance in February 2013, including a three-month search that ended in May when her naked body was found between two barges in the Mississippi River near downtown St. Paul.
