Maplewood man convicted for burglary, check forgery
A Maplewood man was recently convicted of third-degree burglary and felony check forgery in two separate crimes he committed more than a year apart.
Perry E. Williams, 27, was convicted Jan. 22 as one of three suspects who broke into a Woodbury apartment complex in 2012, and for using four fraudulent checks in St. Paul Park in 2011. The complaints said he was caught on security cameras while committing both crimes.
On Aug. 24, 2012, officers were summoned to an apartment complex located on Parkwood Drive in Woodbury, where Williams and two other men reportedly broke into two buildings, shattered car windows and stole valuables from the vehicles, including a stereo and a GPS, according to the criminal complaint filed in Washington County District Court in August of 2012.
Surveillance video from the incident was released on a state crime alert network, and two other law enforcement agencies identified the three men shown in the footage, the complaint said, including Williams.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Washington County District Court in March of 2011, Williams used four checks from a checkbook that belonged to a Minneapolis woman without her permission.
The St. Paul Park Police Department arrested Williams on March 22, 2011, at St. Paul Park Auto Parts, where he was caught using the fraudulent checks, totaling $1,845, over the preceding several days, according to the complaint.
Police found the checkbook under the driver’s seat of Williams’ car, which was parked at the auto parts store parking lot. Surveillance footage showed Williams presenting the four checks.
Williams denied that he was involved, the complaint said.
He was sentenced to a total of more than four years in prison, according to the summary of his sentence announced Feb. 18. He was also ordered to pay $1,810 in restitution to the check-forgery victim.
