15-year-old to stand adult trial in Widstrand beating

Reding was 14 at time of alleged crime

Charles Kenneth Reding, 15, will stand trial as an adult in a case related to the beating of Ray Widstrand on Aug. 4, 2013.

The decision to try him as an adult was made on Wednesday, Feb. 26.

Widstrand was walking near his home and was attacked by a large group of young people near the corner of Payne and Minnehaha avenues.

Widstrand was beaten severely and suffered traumatic injuries, including brain swelling. His prognosis for surviving the attack was slight, but he has since shown a partial recovery.

Redding allegedly threw the first punch that sent Widstrand to the ground, according to a criminal complaint.

Redding faces four charges, including first-degree assault and aggravated robbery for the benefit of a gang.

He made his first appearance in Ramsey County District Court Thursday afternoon at the Law Enforcement Center, 425 Grove St.

Redding was first arrested in relation to the case on Aug. 7, 2013, when he was only 14 years old, according to a complaint from the Ramsey County attorney’s office. Redding lives just blocks from Johnson High School.

According to the complaint, Redding admitted to being at a nearby party, but denied knowing about any sort of fight.

According to Widstrand’s Caring Bridge website, he is going through therapy, is living at home, and even managed to make a brief appearance recently at his job at Suburban Community Channels.
