Beacons stumble in second round
A three-point victory during the regular season was enough to give Concordia Academy a higher seed than St. Croix Lutheran in the Section 4AA boys basketball playoffs. St. Croix Lutheran showed on Saturday that the coaches made a mistake in seeding the Beacons higher.
Fifth-seeded St. Croix went to fourth-seeded Concordia and handed the Beacons a 69-58 defeat in the section quarterfinals.
The Crusaders allowed just four Beacons to score while seven St. Croix Lutheran players made their way onto the score sheet.
Concordia’s Austin Moldenhauer led all scorers with 23 points. The Beacons added 18 from Roger Moore, 13 from Will Preble and four from Sam Root.
Aage Rovney paced St. Croix with 21.
Concordia edged St. Croix Lutheran 68-65 in their regular-season meeting on Jan. 21.
Concordia Academy had little trouble in its playoff opener on Thursday. The Beacons rolled to a 72-34 victory over 13th-seeded Mounds Park Academy in the first round of the Section 4AA playoffs.
Preble nearly outscored MPA by himself as he poured in 31 to lead the Beacons.
Moore added 11 points and Moldenhauer also reached double figures with 10.
Mounds Park Academy had one player in double figures.
