Kozlak’s closing early; hunt for new location continues
In an email sent out to customers, Kozlak’s Royal Oak Restaurant owners Mark and Lynn Satt announced that the restaurant would be closing earlier than anticipated “due to timeline changes that extend beyond our control.” The couple had planned to keep the restaurant open at its current location through April, while searching for a new space where they plan to reopen the popular restaurant.
Kozlak’s has operated since 1977 at the spacious location on Hodgson Road in Shoreview. It will close following dinner service Saturday, March 15.
Mark Satt said that although the restaurant operation belongs to him and Lynn, its building and the land it stands on belonged to Lynn’s father Jack, who passed away in June 2012. The land was put into a trust, which United Properties purchased last year. United Properties plans to develop an Applewood Pointe senior cooperative.
The couple had looked into purchasing the land from the trust since the 1980s, but later on it became too valuable to run a restaurant on.
“There’s not much land left to develop in Shoreview and the restaurant sits on three and a half acres of prime real estate,” Mark Satt said.
The Satts continue to look for a new location and say they would like to stay in Shoreview if they can find a location that suits their needs. The Shoreview community, they say, has been great to them over the years. They have employed probably hundreds of students from Mounds View and other area high schools as well as local adults, and have hosted countless banquets for births, graduations, weddings, funerals and other occasions.
“We encourage you to come out in the next few weeks and join us in saying goodbye to this establishment we love so much. It may soon be gone but the memories that have been created here will last a lifetime,” the Satts said in an online letter to customers.
The Satts say they are unable to take many of the restaurant’s fixtures with them and are holding an online auction for various items from Kozlak’s history, at acebid.com. The couple will provide updates to customers on the status of their search for a new Kozlak’s building via email in the coming weeks and months.
