Former Raiders having successful freshman seasons

Roseville Area High School graduates Emma Schaefer and Ben Buerkle are freshmen at St. Mary’s University in Winona, Minn., and have made headlines on their respective athletic teams. Here’s a look at what each has accomplished this year.

Emma Schaefer

Schaefer plays basketball for St. Mary’s and was named to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference all-first year team. Schaefer’s play helped the Cardinals win the MIAC regular-season championship and reach the NCAA Division III tournament.

Schaefer averaged 4.1 points and 1.8 assists per game. She scored in double figures six times in 27 games, including a string of three games where she averaged nearly 12 points per game. During that stretch, Schaefer went 8-for-9 from three-point range.

Her high single-game point total was 14, which she got against St. Ben’s on Jan. 25.

Another notable game for Schaefer was against Crown College on Nov. 23. She scored 13 points, dished out a season-high six assists and grabbed five rebounds.

St. Mary’s went 24-4 overall and 20-2 in the MIAC. After winning the regular-season conference title, the Cardinals lost in the conference tournament final to St. Thomas.

Despite the loss, St. Mary’s still earned a berth the NCAA tournament. The Cardinals traveled to Wisconsin-Oshkosh on March 7 and suffered a 71-61 loss to the Titans.

Ben Buerkle

Buerkle is a member of the St. Mary’s baseball team and was named the school’s male athlete of the week on March 9. He played in nine of the Cardinals’ 10 games on a trip to Arizona and recorded at least one hit in each game.

Buerkle batted .407 (11-for-27) in the nine games in Tucson. Among his 11 hits were two doubles and two triples, which helped him post a slugging percentage of .630. He also drove in nine runs on the trip.

Buerkle also leads the team with three multiple-RBI games.

Next up for the Cardinals is a four-game trip to Illinois this weekend. St. Mary’s plays Edgewood College and Wheaton once each on Friday and Saturday.
