Masked gunmen rob Subway restaurant in St. Anthony

Suspects may be involved in other similar crimes

St. Anthony Village Police are on the hunt for three suspects who robbed a Subway restaurant in the St. Anthony Village Shopping Center at gunpoint Thursday, March 20 just before 8:30 a.m.

St. Anthony Police Chief John Ohl said there was one employee working at the store located at 2900 N.E. Pentagon Drive when the incident occurred. Although the men were wearing masks, the store employee described the suspects as being three black males between 5’10” and 6’2”. The men reportedly forced open a safe and cash register and quickly left with the cash.

According to Ohl, the same Subway was robbed twice in 2005 and twice in 2009.

Store manager Jose Martinez said he was unable to share details of the incident, but said the employee was not hurt in the robbery and noted that the store has security cameras.

Ohl did not confirm if police had obtained security footage, but said his department is actively working on the case with the Minneapolis Police Department and will possibly be working with other departments as well.

Another Subway restaurant just a couple of miles south of the St. Anthony location in Minneapolis was robbed in a similar fashion at 7 a.m. on the same morning. Armed robbers forced store employees into a walk-in cooler at the sandwich shop, located at 2400 E. Hennepin Avenue, before leaving with cash stolen from registers. The employees left the cooler minutes later and called police. So far no arrests have been made and no detailed descriptions of the suspects have been released.

There have been four similar robberies around the Twin Cities in the past two weeks - including one of another Subway restaurant in south Minneapolis at 3621 W. 50th Street and a Quiznos at 1851 Washington Ave. S. in Minneapolis near the University of Minnesota campus.
