Dakota County Sheriff warns against imposter calls
The Dakota County Sheriff's Department and city police departments in the county have received numerous reports from people who received calls from an impostor claiming to be a sheriff's deputy.
The caller tells each citizen that he or she has not served required time on jury duty, and a warrant will be issued for an arrest unless the citizen pays a specified dollar amount to resolve the matter. The "fee" specified by the caller is usually several hundred dollars that the caller says must be on a prepaid card.
Anyone who has had contact with this caller is asked to collect as much information as possible, including callback telephone numbers or addresses the caller provides, and to call the Investigation Division of the Dakota County Sheriff's Office at 651-431-4720.
The Sheriff's Department -- and law enforcement in general -- will never ask for money over the phone.
Under no circumstances should citizens provide money to the caller.
In general, if citizens receive calls from the Dakota County Sheriff's Office they believe are suspicious they can verify the caller's role by calling the sheriff's department main desk at 651-431-4700.
