Man exchanges fire with cops, gets shot; Shootout spawned form drug deal mishap

The St. Paul Police Department’s SWAT team reported it shot Cory Anthony Lee, 37, after exchanging fire with officers.

Around 10 a.m. Friday, March 21, police went to a residence on the 600 block of Maryland Avenue East to arrest Lee in connection with an aggravated assault investigation. The assault in question took place a few days earlier, on Tuesday, March 18.

Police wearing camouflage tactical gear approached Lee’s residence, ramming doors open in order to enter.

According to a criminal complaint from the Ramsey County attorney’s office, St. Paul Police officer Timothy Moore reportedly announced “Police! Search Warrant,” eventually gaining entrance to Lee’s apartment.

Moore said he entered the apartment to see Lee not far away, poised to shoot at him. Lee shot, and Moore took cover as another officer returned fire with an AR-15 rifle. Police said Lee was shot in the arm.

SWAT medics reportedly treated Lee and took him to Regions Hospital.

Moore reportedly discovered later that the bulletproof vest he’d worn showed damage, indicating the vest had been hit with a bullet.

Lee is charged with second-degree attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm in the incident.

Police had approached Lee at his home to question him regarding an assault case that took place on Tuesday, March 18, around 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of Edgerton Street and Maryland Avenue.

Officers were called to the scene on a report of a shooting.

A witness later told police that Lee had fired at him over stolen marijuana.

No one was struck in the March 18 shooting incident. Lee faces charges of second-degree assault and illegal possession of a firearm in the incident.
