Softball: Pioneers looking to gain top honors

The Hill-Murray Pioneers will be sporting a new softball coach this season. But though she’s new to Hill-Murray, Donny Kealy has had plenty of softball coaching experience, most recently at his own alma mater, Totino-Grace.

So far, he likes what he’s seen of the Pioneers.

“As yet I have not seen any weakness. We have a great fielding team. There is plenty of team speed and our hitting has been exceptional,” he enthused.

“This is just a great team. There is good leadership and I have seen nothing but a group of hard workers.”

Leading the Pioneers will be a pair of veteran seniors as captains. The 2014 captains are shortstop Nicole Thompson and Megan Toninato, who will hold down the centerfield position.

Another senior moving into the pitchers spot is Victoria Ofsthun. She will be backed up by  juniors Jessica Bonfe at first base and Kennedy Houge at third.

Three sophomores round out the roster named by coach Kealy: catcher Katie Johnson, left fielder Jacqueline Kaasa and backup pitcher Hannah Schmidt.

Kealy will be assisted by Chuck Petrich and Dave Marchio.

As coach Healy looked at the Classic Suburban Conference, he didn’t hesitate naming Hill-Murray as one of the teams others will have to contend with if they are going to claim the top spot.

Two of the teams Healy named are neighbors North and Tartan.

Hill-Murray will be tested early on as they open the season at home against North, April 7, 4:15 p.m. They then travel to play:

• April 9, at Richfield
• April 10, at home vs. South St. Paul
• April 14, at Tartan
• April 16, at home vs. Mahtomedi
• April 17, at Simley
• April 21, at home vs. Sibley
• April 23, at North
• April 24, at home vs. Richfield
• April 28, at South St. Paul
• April 30, at home vs. Tartan
• May 1, at Mahtomedi
• May 5, at home vs. Simley
• May 8, at Sibley
