Harambee Elementary School wins ornithology grant

Harambee Elementary School in the Roseville Area School District was recently awarded a nearly $4,000 grant from the Minnesota Ornithologists Union to expand its ornithology opportunities for students.

As part of Harambee’s environmental science focus, students have the opportunity to delve into ornithology, the study of birds.

“The grant provides us with a set of new, high quality binoculars and field guides so that students get the optimal experience when we go outside for bird observation,” said Jenny Eckman, the Environmental Science Specialist at Harambee Elementary.

The grants will also provide each student in the ornithology classes with individualized bird activity books to track observations and gather information about Minnesota birds. The author of the bird activity book will visit Harambee and guide students through a field experience, in addition to providing staff development for teachers.

“We are already doing some interesting work with birds and birding, but the grant allows us to extend and improve our current practice,” said Eckman.
