Visitation’s Upper School in Mendota Heights names next director

Rene Gavic

Rene Gavic, Visitation’s Upper School director of student life, was recently named the next director of the Mendota Heights institution.

After a national search, Visitation School selected Gavic to start her new role on July 1.

“I am keenly aware that it is our responsibility to prepare our students to be successful in a world where the jobs they will have may not have even been created yet,” Gavic said in a statement. “I want to do my part in preserving and enhancing the educational climate of our school so that we continue to graduate strong, confident, compassionate, and independent women.”

She began her career at Visitation in 1987, as the coach of the cross-country and track and field teams. In 1990, she joined the faculty as a mathematics teacher.

After several years, Gavic was named dean of students for the Upper School, which enrolls girls in grades 9 through 12.  That position was later expanded to “director of student life.”

“Rene Gavic possesses a unique combination of academic preparation; teaching, administrative and coaching experiences,” head of school Dawn Nichols said in a statement. “I have great confidence that Rene will honor the rich tradition of our Upper School while moving things forward along the road of ongoing school improvement.”

Gavic holds a bachelor’s of science degree in mathmatics education from the University of Minnesota and a master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Dayton in Ohio.

In 2012, the Minnesota Coalition of Women in Athletic Leadership honored Gavic with a Breaking Barriers award for making sports accessible to girls of all races, ages and ability levels.

Gavic’s daughter, Katie, graduated from Visitation in 2012, and her son Andrew attended the school through sixth grade.
