Former Raider named captain of college team for next season

Maddie Gray

Maddie Gray recently finished up her sophomore season as a member of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women’s swimming and diving team. Next fall, Gray will be more than just a member of the team.

The UW-Eau Claire athletic department last weekend announced the post-season awards for the women’s swim team, and Gray, a 2012 Roseville Area High School graduate, was selected as a captain for the 2014-15 season.

Gray is a backstroke specialist for the BluGolds. She posted first-place finishes in both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events this season.

Gray won the 100-yard backstroke in a four-team meet that included UW-Oshkosh, UW-River Falls and Minnesota State-Moorhead on Nov. 24. Her victory in the 200-yard backstroke came in the same meet.

She posted a second-place finish in the 50-yard backstroke in a dual meet against Moorhead on Nov. 22.

In addition to the backstroke, Gray also competed in the 200- and 500-yard freestyles this season. Her best finish in the 500 was third place and she took sixth in the 200.

Gray has also competed in a number of relays this season.

While at Roseville, Gray was a six-time letterwinner and made All-Conference three times. She won the team’s most inspirational award and MVP honors three times each and was also a team captain.

Gray was also featured in UW-Eau Claire news last week as a part of NCAA Division III Week, a week-long celebration of the impact of athletics and student athletes on college campuses through the nation. She was profiled on the school’s athletics website.

Gray is majoring in English education with a minor in learning disabilities. According to the profile posted on the UW-Eau Claire athletics website, Gray would like to someday teach high school English and coach a swim team.
