Raiders lacrosse building for the post-season

Despite winning only four games during the regular season last season, the Roseville Area High School boys lacrosse team won the playoff game. This spring, the Raiders are once again hoping to hit their stride as sections roll around.

Roseville enters the 2014 campaign with some experience at goalie, defense and midfield, but in need of some additional help at attack.

“Our defense is probably going to be our strong point this year,” said Roseville head coach Jeff Kohoutek. “We’ve got a three-year starter at goalie and at long-stick defense we’ve got all three returning starters from last year.”

Senior Jamison Boggio mans the crease for the Raiders. He was All-Conference and All-Section in 2013.

Leading the defense is sophomore Jack Witthauer, who as a freshman last season earned an All-Conference honorable mention selection.

Roseville returns four of last year’s midfielders, including senior Riley Sanocki. A three-year varsity player, Sanocki was all-conference a year ago. His older brother Matt played lacrosse at Roseville before playing four years of college club lacrosse at Minnesota-Duluth and Minnesota. Matt is Roseville’s junior varsity coach.

Attack is where the Raiders’ roster is the thinnest. Sophomore Drew Liberkowski is back from last year’s team and will be looked to early in the season to carry the load while some newcomers get experience.

“In just the short time we saw him last year, we saw a lot of positives out of him,” Kohoutek said. “He’s really quick, has a knack for scoring and is really good at reading the opportunities that the defense gives to him.”

Kohoutek and his staff know that it might take some time for the team to find its game.

“One of our goals is to just get better from where we started at the beginning of the season,” said Kohoutek. “The season is short. You’ve got two months and then it’s playoff time. Get better every week, every practice is kind of our focus.”

Despite the rain and snow that blew through the state that day, Roseville was able to get its season opener in on April 16. The Raiders traveled to Minneapolis Washburn and fell 6-4 to the co-op team made up of players from the Minneapolis public high schools.

Roseville has three games on the schedule this week, including a trip to Cretin-Derham Hall on Wednesday and Robbinsdale Armstrong on Friday. The Raiders hosted Woodbury on Monday, past the deadline for this edition of the Review.

The Woodbury and Cretin-Derham Hall games are Suburban East Conference games. White Bear Lake appears to be the favorite to win the SEC this spring as the Bears begin the season ranked ninth in the state. White Bear lost just once in the regular season in 2013 and finished fourth at the state tournament.
