Writing with a home field advantage

I’m baaaaacckk...

You thought you would be rid of me after I went away to college, but you thought wrong.

Maybe it was destiny--you see, I grew up about three blocks away from New Brighton City Hall. And I’m pretty sure I was at least partially named after the lake in Arden Hills.

I’m the result of a Mounds View Public Schools education, having attended Valentine Hills Elementary (yes, I still know all the words to “Love in Any Language”), Highview during those embarrassing middle school years and then Irondale High School where I ran cross country and skied Nordic (go Knights!).

To my Tommie father’s dismay, I attended my mom’s alma mater, the College of St. Benedict, where I earned dual degrees in English and Hispanic Studies.

I was lucky enough to land an internship with Lillie News after graduating, and they haven’t been able to get rid of me yet either. In the past 15 months, I’ve covered most of the east metro, previously reporting on the happenings in North St. Paul, Maplewood, Lake Elmo and Oakdale.

But now I’m taking over as the editor of the Roseville Review and Bulletin area newspapers, keeping tabs on what’s going on in my home communities.

Any given day of the week, you’re likely to find me munching on a burrito at my favorite casual Mexican restaurant in St. Anthony, running along the familiar trails in Long Lake Park, picking up my favorite kind of ice cream at Fresh and Natural in Shoreview (I eat a lot of ice cream) or begrudgingly working out at my gym in Roseville.

I am very excited about returning to my roots and working with the communities that have shaped me into the person I am today. I’ve already seen many familiar faces in the last couple weeks, and I expect to see many more of you as I continue reporting in the area.

Being from around here certainly gives me a leg up on knowing what has people talking, but I still need your help! Please feel free to call me up with news tips or story ideas, and I encourage residents to submit letters to the editor to express their views on local issues.
