Concordia Academy Beacons play three games in 22 hours

The Beacons picked up their first conference victory of the season on Saturday and will look to build on that win this week.

Concordia Academy completed a whirlwind 22 hours by beating Breck 6-0 on Saturday morning/afternoon. Saturday’s game, played at Breck, started at 11 a.m., which, when coupled with Friday’s two games, meant that the Beacons played three games in less than 24 hours.

The baseball marathon started Friday at 4 p.m. with a home game against St. Agnes. The Beacons trailed 3-0 going to the bottom of the seventh inning before scoring twice. Down a run, Concordia had the bases loaded with one out but couldn’t push across the tying run.

There wasn’t much time to lament the missed opportunity, however, as the Beacons had to convoy down to Parade Stadium in Minneapolis for a 7 p.m. meeting with DeLaSalle. The Islanders had little sympathy for Concordia as they reached double digits in runs in an 11-1 victory.

Concordia rebounded nicely following a good night’s sleep (at least for those who didn’t stay up to watch the Wild on Friday). John Holleran threw a one-hit shutout against Breck as the Beacons snapped a four-game losing streak. Holleran helped himself out by picking off three baserunners.

Holleran also helped himself out at the plate by driving in a run and scoring a run. He went 5-for-8 over the three games while Cole Schuessler was 5-for-10. Chase Wood had a solid day against Breck by going 2-for-2, including a double, and added a sacrifice bunt, a walk, a stolen base and a run batted in.

It’s a less hectic week on tap this week as Concordia plays four games that all start at least 24 hours apart. Among the games on the schedule is a trip to Tri-Metro Conference leader and second-ranked St. Anthony Village (9-0) on Tuesday. The Beacons then host Minnehaha Academy on Wednesday and travel to Legacy Christian Academy for a non-conference game on Friday.
