Mustangs fastpitch gears up for long week of games

The Mustangs have had trouble putting up wins so far this season but they’ll have plenty of chances this week. While not quite as bad as a year ago, doubleheaders are becoming common again this season.

Mounds View played a doubleheader last week and has three more on the schedule through the end of the regular season.

The first doubleheader of the season didn’t go very well for the Mustangs, who faced Woodbury in a double dip on Saturday. Mounds View’s pitchers had trouble shutting down the Royals’ Jordyn Yorczek, who went 6-for-9 with seven runs batted in.

Woodbury scored early and often as it built 6-1 leads after three innings in both games. The Royals went on to win game one 10-2 and game two 13-1.

The Mustangs picked up their two victories so far this season in back-to-back games against Cretin-Derham Hall and White Bear Lake in late April. Mounds View whipped White Bear Lake 19-4 on April 23 and Cretin 8-2 on April 25.

Against White Bear, Annie Hentges went 3-for-3 with four runs scored and four runs driven in and Tess Martin went 4-for-4. Mounds View pounded out 16 hits in the game.

Hentges also had a nice game against Cretin by going 3-for-5 with two RBI. Kelsey Murphy added a 2-for-2 performance as the Mustangs racked up 11 hits against the Raiders.

Mounds View (3-6 overall, 2-6 in the Suburban East Conference) entered play this week having lost its last three games. The Mustangs’ first chance at stopping that streak came at home on Monday in a doubleheader against Roseville. Results were unavailable for this edition of the Bulletin.

The rest of this week’s schedule features a doubleheader at Park-Cottage Grove on Tuesday, a single game at East Ridge on Wednesday and a single home game against White Bear Lake on Friday.
