SAVHS grad leads comeback that clinches conference title

Chris Lawson

The College of St. Scholastica men’s track and field team went in search of its third consecutive conference championship on Saturday but trailed by 10 points with two events remaining. That’s when a St. Anthony Village High School graduate started the comeback.

Chris Lawson, a 2012 St. Anthony graduate, won the 5,000 meters to help the Saints rally and clinch the title. His win helped turn the 10-point deficit into an eight-point victory.

In addition to winning the 5,000, Lawson also turned in a second-place performance in the 1,500 meters in a time of 4:04.66.

Lawson, a sophomore, not only won the 5,000 meters but he set an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference championship meet record with his time of 15:36.48. Last year as a freshman he finished second in the 5,000 meters.

Earlier this year, Lawson won the 5,000 meters at the UMAC indoor championships. He holds school the school record in the indoor 5,000.

Lawson also owns the school record in outdoor 5,000 and 10,000-meter races and has the second-best time in the 8,000-meter cross country race.

In two years at St. Scholastica, Lawson has earned all-conference honors six times — twice each in cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field.
