Track and field teams from Roseville Area High School and Concordia Academy last week went after berths in the state true-team meet, but came up short. Roseville’s girls team and Concordia’s boys squad finished runner-up in their respective sections.

Roseville Area High School

As has been the case for a number of years, the battle in Section 6AAA came down to Mounds View and Roseville. The Mustangs outscored the Raiders 1,009.5 to 947.5 and will compete in the state meet on Friday.

Despite the setback at the section meet, Roseville had one more shot at a state berth via the wildcard spot. The wildcard berth goes to the team that wins the paper meet that compares the results of the eight section runners-up. Eden Prairie won the paper meet with 767.5 points while the Raiders wound up sixth with 527 points.

Among Roseville’s top performers at the section meet were senior Caroline Brisbois, who won both the 1,600 and 3,200-meter races, and senior Tianna McKinney, who joined freshmen Nicole Willmus and Megan Eklund and junior Sophia Miliotis to win the 4x200-meter relay. McKinney added a second-place performance in the 400-meter dash and a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash.

Sophomore Sara Hain took second place in the 800 meters. Senior Kathryn Pascale and junior Monica Burich finished third and fourth, respectively, in the discus.

On the boys side, Roseville finished third with 786.5 points. Mounds View won the section title with 1,007.5 points and North St. Paul was second with 852.

The Raiders’ lone event win went to sophomore Sam Adeniyi, who won the high jump. Adeniyi added a third-place performance in the 110-meter hurdles.

Senior Dan Wahlstedt added to Roseville’s point total with a pair of runner-up finishes in the 400 and 800-meter races. Senior Ben Teske ran third in the 300-meter hurdles and senior Nick Hayes took third in the shot put and fourth in the discus.

Next up for the Roseville track teams are the Suburban East Conference championships on May 20 and 22 at East Ridge High School.

Concordia Academy

The Beacons boys track and field team made a run at the section true-team title as well, but came up just short. Concordia finished second at the section meet and came up short in the wildcard standings.

Competing in the Section 4A true-team meet, Concordia amassed 1,047.5 points but couldn’t keep pace with Maple Lake. The Irish racked up 1,284 points to win the section title and clinch a spot in this week’s state meet.

In the paper meet, which compares the results of the eight section runners-up, Concordia finished sixth. The wildcard berth to the state meet went to Jackson Country Central, which finished second to Luverne in Section 3A.

Concordia’s boys team captured two event victories and one runner-up finish at the section meet. Brandon Larsen took first place in the shot put and the Beacons’ 4x100-meter relay team also won its event. The 4x800-meter relay team finished second.

On the girls side, Concordia finished fourth in the team standings with an even 1,000 points. The Beacons kept pace with the top teams thanks in part to six first-place performances. Clara Paul won both the long jump and triple jump while Megan Fallert added a win in the high jump.

Miriam Nordquist won the 100-meter dash, and Concordia also got event victories from its 4x100 and 4x200-meter relay teams. Nordquist added a second-place performance in the 100-meter hurdles and Fallert was second in the 300-meter hurdles.

Maple Lake’s girls team also won the section title.

Next up for the Beacons are the Tri-Metro Conference championships on Tuesday at Macalester College in St. Paul.
