Irondale baseball looks to improve record
The Knights’ record has hovered around the .500 mark most of the season, but they have a couple of impressive victories to their credit. One of them came last Friday.
Having dropped the first meeting with Benilde-St. Margaret’s, Irondale ventured to the St. Louis Park school in search of an upset of the third-ranked Red Knights. They climbed back on the bus to go home with that goal accomplished.
Irondale knocked off Benilde 8-2 to move a season-high two games above .500. The Knights got the ball rolling early with three runs in the top of the first inning and four more in the third.
Jake Goldsmith picked up the complete-game victory as he gave up two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out nine.
Unfortunately for Irondale, the team couldn’t follow the victory up with a win the next day against Mounds View. The Mustangs picked up a 4-1 decision on Saturday afternoon. Sam Hentges held the Knights to one run on four hits while fanning 11.
Irondale closes out the regular season with six games on the schedule this week. The Knights hosted Columbia Heights on Monday, past the deadline for this edition of the Bulletin. They travel to Robbinsdale Cooper on Wednesday for a doubleheader and to Rogers for a single game on Thursday.
Irondale’s final North Suburban Conference game is Friday at home against Spring Lake Park and the season finale is Saturday at North Branch.
