Roseville wins softball playoff opener's picture

It has been an up-and-down season for the Roseville Area High School fastpitch softball team and the Raiders are hoping that their playoff opener on Tuesday was the beginning of another upswing.

Roseville, seeded fifth in Section 4AAA, wasted little time getting going in its game against 12th-seeded Mahtomedi. The Raiders scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning en route to an 11-1, six-inning victory.

With the win, Roseville advances to the double-elimination portion of the section tournament and a second-round game on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. against fourth-seeded East Ridge.

The Raiders and Raptors split a pair of regular-season games. Roseville won the season-opener against East Ridge 5-2 but the Raptors returned the favor on May 14 in a 7-0 victory.

The section playoffs continue on Thursday with two more rounds at the McKnight softball complex in North St. Paul.

Against Mahtomedi, Emma Hylen gave up one run on three hits and a walk while striking out five. Hylen also contributed at the plate by going 2-for-4 with four runs batted in. Toni Bishop drove in two runs and Aryka Knoche went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI.

Roseville finished the game with 12 hits and also benefitted from five walks.

The Beacons saw their season come to an on Tuesday in Minneapolis.

Fourth-seeded DeLaSalle erased a six-run deficit and beat sixth-seeded Concordia Academy 9-7 in the fourth round of the Section 4AA playoffs.

Concordia led 7-1 thanks to a six-run fourth inning but couldn’t squelch the Islanders’ comeback bid. DeLaSalle scored five in the fifth to pull within one and added three more in the sixth to complete the rally.

The loss was Concordia’s second of the post-season and knocked them out of the tournament. The Beacons opened the section playoffs with a 12-11, eight-inning victory over 11th-seeded St. Paul Central and then fell 3-1 to third-seeded St. Paul Como Park.

Concordia won its first elimination game 8-3 over seventh-seeded St. Paul Highland Park to set up the contest with DeLaSalle.
