The St. Anthony Village High School fastpitch softball team is trying to reach the state tournament for the third consecutive season but that goal got a bit more difficult to attain. The Huskies lost their first playoff game on Tuesday and face a difficult task.

Top-seeded Visitation topped second-seeded St. Anthony 4-1 in the winner’s-bracket final on Tuesday and is now in the driver’s seat in the race for the Section 4AA championship. The Blazers are the lone undefeated team in the section and will have two shots at winning the section title next week.

For the Huskies, the loss means they must win three straight playoff games, beginning on Thursday at home. St. Anthony takes on either DeLaSalle or Minnehaha Academy in the loser’s-bracket final at 5:45 p.m.

If St. Anthony wins on Thursday, it will advance to the championship game on May 27. In order to advance to state, the Huskies will need to beat Visitation twice in a row, once on May 27 and again on May 29.

The Huskies won their first three section games by a combined score of 48-1 over St. Paul Washington, St. Paul Highland Park and St. Paul Como Park.

Against Visitation on Tuesday, St. Anthony fell behind 1-0 but tied it up with a run in the top of the fourth inning. Visitation answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to go in front for good.

The Huskies had difficulty solving Visitation pitcher Kiersten Anderson-Glass, who struck out 14 in a complete-game effort.

Mounds View

Scoring runs hasn’t been the Mustangs’ strong suit in recent games and that trend continued in the first round of the section playoffs on Tuesday. Fortunately for Mounds View, a minimal amount of offense was still enough.

Mounds View scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning in its 1-0 victory over Tartan in a first-round Section 4AAA playoff game at Rice Creek Park in Shoreview.

Jacky Volkert scored the run and also threw out a pair of baserunners from her catcher position to help secure the victory.

With the win, seventh-seeded Mounds View advances to the double-elimination portion of the section tournament and faces second-seeded Hill-Murray on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

Head coach Frank Roth was at a loss to try and explain why his team’s bats have gone so cold in recent weeks. Mounds View scored only eight runs in its final five regular-season games but had shown flashes earlier in the spring.

Against a veteran Roseville pitching staff, Mounds View scored five runs in each game of a doubleheader on May 5. The Mustangs put up 11 runs against a solid Forest Lake team on April 22.

Shutting out Tartan is a nice accomplishment but from here on out one run is unlikely to cut it against teams like Hill-Murray, top-seeded North St. Paul, Woodbury and East Ridge.

Regardless of what happens against Hill-Murray on Wednesday, the Mustangs have a game Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at McKnight in North St. Paul against either third-seeded Woodbury or sixth-seeded Stillwater.

Irondale

The Knights open the post-season on Wednesday with a home game. As a top-four seed in Section 5AAA, Irondale received a bye in the first round, which was postponed a day because of Monday’s rain.

Irondale kicks off the playoffs by hosting 12th-seeded Coon Rapids at 4:30 p.m. The Cardinals pulled off an upset in the first round by beating fifth-seeded Osseo 3-1.

The Knights should be plenty rested for today’s game after having six days off since their last game. Irondale (15-3) closed out the regular season by winning its last six games and in those games it gave up only six runs.

A win on Wednesday sends Irondale to the third round and, most likely, a trip to Maple Grove for a showdown with the top-seeded and top-ranked Crimson on Thursday. Maple Grove is the two-time defending section champion and the heavy favorite to make it three consecutive trips to state.
