Herberger’s has opened its first clearance shop, located in the Birch Run Station shopping center just west of Maplewood Mall.

It marked its grand opening on Thursday, May 15, by giving people a chance to save some money during their shopping rendezvous.

Pennsylvania-based Bon-Ton owns the new clearance center, as well as three others of its kind. Along with its Herberger’s franchises, Bon-Ton also has two Carson Pirie Scott clearance centers in Chicago and one Boston Store outlet in Milwaukee. Mary Kerr, director of communications for Bon-Ton sounds excited to be in Maplewood.

“The response from customers so far has been great,” she said.  “We like to locate these clearance stores in strip malls where there are other off-price retailers and/or a grocery store, etc.  -- high traffic areas.”

With the Birch Run Station’s close proximity to Maplewood Mall, one potential concern could stem from the full-priced clothing stores within the mall’s walls. Stores that may be affected by the Herberger’s bargain outlet include Macy’s, Kohl’s, JC Penny and Sears, among others.

Maplewood Mall management chose not to comment, but Kerr of Bon-Ton offered assurances that there wouldn’t be any hard feelings or competition between the sites, saying, “They don’t even know we’re there.”

The 27,000-square-foot space was an Office Max for a number of years, before it ultimately left the site. The selection at the Herberger’s clearance store ranges from ladies, kids and men’s clothing, shoes, home items, and other accessories, with discounts of 60 to 80 percent off retail prices.

While they are not able to give exact figures, Kerr was happy with the store’s opening week.
“I will tell you that we are very pleased with the initial response,” she said. “We know our customers love our Herberger’s stores and are finding great pricing and quality at our clearance center.”

While there may or may not be some animosity between the new store and its full-priced Maplewood Mall competitors, the Birch Run Station has a plethora of discount stores, including Savers, Dollar Tree and Burlington Coat Factory.
