Knights, Mustangs in lacrosse playoff action Thursday's picture

The Section 5 boys lacrosse playoffs kicked off on Wednesday night and it was successful opener for Irondale. The Knights knocked off Robbinsdale Cooper in the play-in match to advance to Thursday’s quarterfinals.

Irondale’s 10-4 victory over the Hawks sets up a contest at top-seeded White Bear Lake at 7 p.m. The Knights entered the post-season with just two victories, with one coming against Cooper.

Drew Hormann led the Knights against Cooper with three goals while Nathan Larson and Jamie Frischman added two each. Also scoring for Irondale were Spencer Beck, Alec Burgoyne and Dom Mauricio.

The White Bear Lake team awaiting the Knights on Thursday went 11-1 in the regular season and the only loss came against sixth-ranked Benilde-St. Margaret’s. The Bears closed out the regular season on a seven-game winning streak.

Also in action on Thursday is the Mounds View boys lacrosse squad. The second-seeded Mustangs host seventh-seeded Providence Academy at 7 p.m.

Mounds View went 10-2 in the regular season, losing only to Stillwater and White Bear Lake by two goals both times. The Mustangs won their final seven regular-season contests. Providence Academy enters the post-season with a record of 5-12 and owns wins over Rogers (twice), St. Cloud Tech (twice) and Spring Lake Park.

Thursday’s winners advance to the section semifinals on Monday.

The girls lacrosse teams from Mounds View and Irondale begin the post-season on Thursday with home matches.

Irondale (10-2) is the No. 2 seed in Section 5 and hosts seventh-seeded Robbinsdale Cooper at 5 p.m. The Knights beat the Hawks 11-5 during the regular season.

The 10 wins are the most in the history of the program for Irondale, which is looking for its first state-tournament berth. The Knights’ two losses came at the hands of Breck and Benilde-St. Margaret’s.

Mounds View is the third seed with a record of 6-6. The Mustangs host sixth-seeded Totino-Grace at 5 p.m.

Mounds View went 2-1 against Section 5 teams during the regular season. The wins were over Roseville and White Bear Lake and the loss came against Irondale in the season opener in early April.

The Mustangs are looking to return to the state tournament for the second time in program and first since 2010.
