Lake Elmo Library receives grant from Stillwater Elks

Funds will support early literacy program

The Stillwater Elks Lodge 179 recently awarded the Lake Elmo Public Library with a $1,500 grant that will be used to fund its “1,000 Books before Kindergarten” an early literacy program.

Research shows that reading aloud is the single most important thing families can do to help a young child prepare for reading and learning.

Only 48 percent of young children in this country are read to each day. More than 15 percent of young children are read to by family members fewer than three times each week.

The Lake Elmo Library has decided to launch the “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” with hopes to motivate parents, grandparents, siblings, and caregivers to recognize the importance and to read to children. Grant funds will be used to purchase books, reading incentives, and promotional materials.
