Lake Elmo Days cancelled

The city of Lake Elmo recently announced it would no longer be hosting Lake Elmo Days, previously known as Fall Festival, which has taken place the weekend after Labor Day since 2007. The city introduced the festival that year as a 50th anniversary celebration for the Lake Elmo Fire Department.

“Through feedback received we found that the weekend after Labor Day is a very busy one for both attendees and participants,” Lake Elmo communications coordinator Alyssa MacLeod said in a written statement. “There are also a handful of other events taking place in the St. Croix Valley on that same weekend, which causes a competition for attendance.”

Mayor Mike Pearson added that city staff has done a lot of the heavy lifting for the two-day festival.

“There’s a lot going on in the city right now, and it has placed a burden on staff.”

The city plans to replace Lake Elmo Days with a series of smaller community events this summer, which include: the “Welcome Summer” family event in downtown Lake Elmo on Saturday, June 21 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; a community block party in downtown on Friday, July 11 from 7 to 11 p.m.; and “Battle of the Bands” in Lions Park on Friday, Aug. 8 from 7 to 11 p.m.

“The introduction of these new events allows us to offer something for everyone,” MacLeod said. “By holding several smaller events throughout the summer, we hope to be more accommodating to people’s schedules, and allow more opportunites for community gathering.”

Additionally, local service organizations will be hosting fun events this summer, such as the annual “Fourth of July Kiddie Parade,” a Rotary-sponsored ice cream social, and the Lake Elmo Jaycees’ 38th annual “Huff ‘n Puff Softball Tournament” on Aug. 7-10.

MacLeod said the city would soon release more details on those events.
