Mustangs tennis closes season with trip to state

Heading into the state tournament last week, the top-seeded Mounds View High School boys tennis team was expected to have to contend with challenges from Minnetonka and Wayzata in its quest for a state championship. It turned out to be a less-heralded but more familiar foe that dashed the Mustangs’ title hopes.

Unseeded East Ridge surprised Mounds View in the first match of the tournament on June 3. The Raptors, which lost to the Mustangs during the regular season, felled the Suburban East Conference and Section 5AA champions 4-3 in the state quarterfinals.

Mounds View rebounded from the defeat to claim the consolation championship by beating Rochester Mayo 5-2 in the consolation semifinals and St. Cloud Tech 6-1 inn the final.

East Ridge followed up its victory by losing to Minnetonka in the semifinals and then beating Elk River in the third-place match. Wayzata defeated Minnetonka 5-2 to claim its second consecutive state team title.

East Ridge was able to down Mounds View by taking three singles points and one doubles point. The Mustangs got their lone singles point from Jake Trondson, who won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3. The doubles points came from the No. 2 team of Griffin Anderson and Austin Wiegert and the No. 3 duo of Petro Alex and Andrew Tang.

Against Mayo, Mounds View got singles wins from Hunter Krebsbach (No. 2) and Trondson (No. 3) and doubles victories from Henry Morris and Carter Jones at No. 1 and Anderson and Wiegert at No. 2.

Krebsbach (No. 2), Trondson (No. 3) and Abe Alex (No. 4) won singles matches against St. Cloud Tech and Mounds View swept all three doubles points.

Mounds View finished the season with a team record of 23-3.

Following the team tournament, Morris and Jones played in the state doubles tournament. The opened the tournament against St. Cloud Tech’s Riley Bates and Riley Peterson and lost in three sets (6-4, 4-6, 6-3). In the consolation bracket, Morris and Jones lost 6-3, 6-3 to Mahtomedi’s Teddy Bowie and Derek Johnson.
