Free meals offered to kids this summer

This summer, School District 197 will offer free meals to area kids.

The district is again participating in the Minnesota Department of Education’s Summer Food Service Program.

The district will provide free, healthy breakfast and lunch meals at three schools to all children 18 and under.

No pre-registration is required; children simply need to show up to receive the meal.

“This program is crucial to many children in our area, and we are proud to provide them with healthy, accessible meals,” said Jeff Wolfer, District 197 child nutrition director, in a statement. “Last summer we served more than 23,000 meals to kids, and this summer we hope to do the same with the help of volunteers from our community.”

The Summer Food Service Program assists local organizations, such as schools, to operate programs providing nutritious meals and healthy activities for children during the summer months when school-year nutrition and activity programs are unavailable.
