Alleged New Brighton shooter gets $1 million bail

Neal Zumberge

Last week, bail was set at $1 million for Neal Curtis Zumberge, the New Brighton man accused of shooting his neighbors, killing one and wounding another, the apparent result of a long-simmering dispute over feeding deer in their Knollwood Drive neighborhood.

Zumberge, 57, who had previously appeared at hearings without a lawyer, explaining that he was selling his house in order to pay for one, appeared in Ramsey County district court June 27 represented by defense attorney Bill Orth. The house sold June 16.

Charged with one count of second-degree murder, and another of attempted second-degree murder, Zumberge allegedly killed Todd Stevens, 46, and injured Jennifer Cleven, 48, in a May 5 shooting outside Stevens’ home. Zumberge pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Zumberge will next appear in court July 17; his wife, Paula Zumberge, is charged as an accessory and allegedly egged her husband on during the shootings. Her trial is set to begin August 11.
