New Brighton Park and Rec offers host of free activities in July

New Brighton Parks and Recreation is offering free outdoor classes and events in city parks through the end of July, teaming up with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), a national non-profit, for “OUT is IN,” a part of national Park and Recreation month.

Premised on a survey conducted by NRPA that said almost 30 percent of U.S. adults do not spend time outside on a daily basis--nearly half of those who do get outside spend fewer than 30 minutes doing so--”OUT is IN” challenges people to spend the month of July doing things that they’d normally do inside, but outside.

“Partnering with the National Parks and Recreation Association to provide a fun and unique way for residents and those from surrounding communities to go outside and enjoy our parks parallels nicely with our mission,” New Brighton Parks and Recreation director Sandy Breuer said in a release. “Our mission is to improve the quality of life in New Brighton and we are excited to be offering wonderful events for all ages; we hope people will come out and take advantage of them.”

Events planned for “OUT is IN” will take place July 10, 16, 22 and 28. Scheduled events include yoga in the park, lap swimming, hiking, golf course clean-up, and playground fit lab, among other activities. Additionally, the city is offering a free pass to the fitness center at the New Brighton Community Center to those who visit five different playgrounds at city parks during July.

New Brighton Parks and Recreation also offered up some ideas for New Brighton residents to try in order to get outside, such as eschewing the kitchen table for some picnicking in the park, or simply bringing the laptop outside in order to go through emails.

There is a social media component to “OUT is IN” as well, with New Brighton Parks and Recreation urging residents to use the hashtag #JulyOUTisIN on Twitter and Instagram when posting photos of themselves outdoors.

For a full list of activities planned through “OUT is IN,” as well as a form for logging playground visits, visit www.ci.new-brighton.mn.us under the Parks and Recreation Department tab.
