39ers down Oakdale Mavericks to capture third-place trophy
The North St. Paul 39ers and Oakdale Mavericks participated in the annual Fourth of July American Legion baseball tournament at Alexandria.
The 39ers got off to a fast start in the tournament winning their first two games.
In game one on Independence Day, they went up against the Starbuck Post 325 Stags and all but decimated them with a score of 17-5.
On July 5 the 39ers proved the better of Worthington Post 5 as they again had a big fifth inning and won going away by 13-8.
The next opponent on June 5 was host Alexandria Post 87, and the 39ers suffered their first defeat, 6-2.
That left North St. Paul facing a familiar foe -- the Oakdale Mavericks -- in a June 6 game for the third-place trophy. The 39ers players, who primarily attend North High, dominated their rivals, who are from Tartan.

Against the Mavericks the 39ers scored consistently through the entire contest.
In the top of the first leadoff hitter Corky Hildebrandt lined a single to center. Tom Mulvaney followed with a ground shot through the left side hole sending Hildebrandt to third.
An attempt at a double steal saw Hildebrandt out at the plate, but Mulvaney ended on third. An error on a ball belted by Steve Orme allowed the 39ers to go up 1-0.
In the third they increased their margin by two more when Hildebrandt led off with a walk. Consecutive wild pitches and Hildebrandt was on third.
Mulvaney singled into left plating Hildebrandt. Joe Messerole hit into a force at second but was safe on a fielder’s choice. Sam Farley worked a walk and Elvin Baez doubled into centerfield to score Messerole and the 39ers were on top 3-0.
Play moved into the top of the fourth and the 39ers’ bats kept cracking. Jake McDonough smacked a two-out single and stole second. Hildebrandt - 2-for-2 - followed suit with a Texas Leaguer into center that scored McDonough. Mulvaney - 3-for-3 - kept things going when he beat out a slow-roller to the right side. Messerole then sent a shot to center field, and Hildebrandt scored to push the total to 5-0.
In the top of the fifth the scoring parade continued. Baez banged a double to the right center field gap. A second out later Jace Piepgras doubled and Baez scored. McDonough followed with a single into right field and Piepgras crossed the plate.
In the last of the fifth the Mavericks were finally able to break through with a run. An outfield error allowed Mitch Cozatt to move to second. A second error in the infield put Nolan Russell on base as Cozatt crossed the plate.
Murnane led off the sixth and was thumped by a pitch. Baez singled, sending Murnane to third. Foote knocked a shot to right field and Murnane scored running the count to 8-1.
In the first of the seventh the 39ers put the finishing touches on their tournament outing.
Gus Varland started with a single into left. Zach Lauzon was safe on an infield error. Sam Farley also was safe on an error. Baez - he was 4-for-4 with three RBI - doubled into the right field corner scoring Varland and Lauzon. A third error allowed Dylan Foote to gain the base paths and Farley to score pushing the 39ers advantage to the 11-1 final and the third-place finish in the Alexandria tournament.
