Flooding shuts down events at Sibley Historic Site in Mendota
Minnesota History River Paddle, Color Dash cancelled
Damage from heavy summer rains has caused two events at the Sibley Historic Site in Mendota to be abruptly cancelled.
Flooding after recent dowpours and the swollen Mississippi River have raised concerns about safety and contributed to low registration for the Minnesota History River Paddle Aug. 2 and 9. Mudslides recently tore through the Big River Trail, shutting down the route for the Color Dash Aug. 16.
The river paddle was going to offer a tour of historic buildings and a guide-led canoe trip to explore the environmental, cultural and historical significance of where the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers converge.
The Color Dash was going to wind through the trails behind the Sibley Historic Site, where runners would start in a white T-shirt and end covered in colors. Food and live music afterwards were scheduled.
The Minnesota Historical Society issued a statement about the cancellations Friday, July 25, apologizing for "the inconvenience."
