The Tri-City Red American Legion baseball team plays a crucial third-round game in the Sub-State 8 playoffs on Friday at Midway Stadium. Tri-City takes on Forest Lake with a berth in the championship round on the line.

Tri-City Red is the No. 1 seed in the tournament and is trying to reach the state tournament after falling short a year ago. Forest Lake is the defending sub-state champion and looking for back-to-back trips to the state tournament.

Tri-City reached Friday’s game by beating Tri-City Blue and Lino Lakes in the first two rounds of the tournament. Red topped Blue 12-2 in seven innings on Wednesday and Lino Lakes 4-2 on Thursday.

Forest Lake, the third seed for the second year in a row, beat Maplewood Green 6-1 in the first round and White Bear Lake 7-4 in the second round.

The Tri-City Red/Forest Lake winner gets Saturday off and returns to Midway Stadium on Sunday at 5 p.m. for the championship round, where it will have two chances to win one game and advance to state. The loser must win a game Saturday night at 8 p.m. at Midway to reach the finals and then must win twice on Sunday to go to state.

Friday’s game might give Tri-City and Forest Lake that déjà vu feeling. They met in the same game of the sub-state tournament a year ago and Forest Lake came away with a 6-0 victory. The loss forced Tri-City Red to win a losers’ bracket game to reach the final.

In the championship round, Tri-City Red won game one 5-2 but dropped the finale 3-2 to miss out on a trip to state.

The Tri-City Red players who were a part of the Mounds View High School state championship team this spring were at Midway Stadium eight weeks ago in the same position in the Section 5AAA playoffs. The Mustangs beat Maple Grove that night to secure a spot in the section final, where they beat Champlin Park to advance to the state tournament.
