Falcon Heights council member resigns; city looks to fill vacancy

Citing “personal circumstances beyond [his] control,” Falcon Heights council member Keith Gosline submitted a letter of resignation to the city council June 12. The council voted to accept the resignation, effective Aug. 1, at its July 23 meeting.

“I have enjoyed the privilege and pleasure of being a member of the Falcon Heights City Council,” Gosline, whose term would have expired January 2018, wrote in the letter. “The incoming council member is fortunate to be working with such a compassionate and competent mayor, council and city staff.”

Mayor Peter Lindstrom said Gosline was a “fantastic” council member whose public service will be missed.

“Keith was a great council member and we will miss him on the council without a doubt. He has a ton of ideas and brought a unique perspective to the council,” Lindstrom said.

Gosline was re-elected to the council last year for his second term. Because three years of his term remain, the council will appoint a new member to fill the vacancy until the Nov. 2015 election, when a special election for the seat will be held. Also on the ballot next year will be two additional council members and the mayoral seat. Pam Harris will be the only member of the council not up for election at that time.

Residents interested in applying for the seat must do so by Aug. 29 and will go through an interview with a selection committee made up of the mayor, a council member and one member from each of the city’s five committees.

The council will conduct the final interview with hopes to have chosen a new member by the end of September.

“I encourage anybody to think about applying for the position,” Lindstrom said. “We have a tremendously deep bench of talent in the city, and I’m confident we’re going to be able to find somebody with a commitment to public service.”

Applications can be submitted online or in person at City Hall. More information is available at www.falconheights.org.
