Familiar foe awaits Irondale in week two
Although the Irondale High School football team is now playing in the Northwest Suburban Conference and facing teams it hasn't played in a long time -- if ever -- the Knights have a game this week against a team they know very well.
Spring Lake Park pays a visit to Wendt Field on Friday in a match-up of former North Suburban Conference rivals. Both schools landed in the Northwest Suburban following the North Suburban break-up.
This week's game will be the fourth installment of the Block Trophy series. The traveling trophy, a long block of wood painted with Irondale's school colors on one end and Spring Lake Park's on the other and featuring a large metal handle, was first played for in 2011. The Panthers won the first two games before Irondale took possession following its 20-7 victory last year.
Irondale's win last year snapped the Panthers' three-game winning streak, which predated the Block Trophy, in the series. Prior to 2013, the Knights' most recent win against Spring Lake Park was a wild 49-42 triumph in 2009.
The Knights enter week two fresh off a 56-8 loss against Osseo in the season opener last week. The Orioles were a state-tournament team last year and showed why by scoring four touchdowns in each of the first two quarters.
Irondale got its only touchdown in the second quarter on a 24-yard touchdown run by Nick Nelson. The Knights scored the only points of the second half on a safety in the fourth quarter as Isaac Ackerman made a tackle in the end zone.
