Another thanksgiving day

Everyday is a day when we give thanks for the blessings that we receive. The story of the early pilgrims gets special attention in the fall season. The birth of our Lord is remembered during December. We have just finished another Good Friday and Easter weekend time of giving special thanks. At meal time we sit down, bow our heads and give thanks for our food.

Everything changes

Recently, I was out taking a walk. For all who go walking we have something in common. It is a good time to think, daydream and remember things from the past. I also find it a good time to review significant ideas that were memorized over the years. It can also be a convenient time to pray. Since we can do two exercises at the same time, it need never be a waste of time.

We need reminders

We get busy in our day to day activities and often forget some significant areas and practices of daily living. The older we get the more we hear comments like: “It just slipped my mind,” or “I just forgot.” The following reminders are reminders that we have sought to remind readers of a few times during the 35-plus years that this column has been written.

Different levels of love

A few weeks ago our pastor gave an excellent sermon on the three kinds of love. I had heard this sermon preached or taught a few times before. For some reason the concepts of love have entered my mind several times lately. The term is used in so many different ways. Let’s just keep it on the person to person relationship level.

Only you really know

Everyday we live with our self images and reputations. No other person knows what our character is really like. Only you and I know if our reputations and our characters are in real harmony. We think of personal integrity as doing or being the same in private as in public.

Our long term investments

Many of us look at our daily newspapers. A quick look at the headlines, the sports section, the weather page and the business section take me about 30 minutes. My financial adviser does an excellent job but he can’t control the markets. Last week the Dow Jones took a slide. If all of our long term investments are financial or materialistic we can be in for disappointments.

Another year is passing by

January, 2014 will soon be history. Have I or am I accomplishing what is satisfying. Income tax planning, preparation and filing is always a hurdle. A good tax person can be a big help. Eating, exercising and attitude can help make us feel better. They aid in keeping good physical and mental healthy.

Who is really in control?

A few years before I retired from teaching at North High School, earth science was added to our curriculum. None of us were anxious to teach it and only two of us had the recommended qualifications. There were about seven classes. I volunteered to take a full load of five. The last classes that I had taken in any earth sciences were more than 25 years earlier in graduate school. My reasoning was that preparation for teaching the course will require a lot of work. Why not teach it five times each day.

A 2014 prescription

The Citizens Emergency Response Team (CERT) members are neither professional law enforcement officers, nor are they trained firefighters. They are first responders without credentials. They are citizens who are trained to respond in a limited capacity if bad things should happen. They are generally under the local law enforcement entity. Ours is under the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Department. The training is similar throughout the nation. It is taught by professionals in areas of likely need if that need arises.

2013 - Another blessed year

This past year has generally been a good one for Norma and me. We took a trip to Texas in late March to spend a few days with Norma’s brother, Jon and his wife, Cheryl. During the summer we drive up to the Bemidji area several times. Camp Dellwater and Oak Hills Christian College and Bible Camp are both special to us. Sixty-five years ago I was a freshman at Oak Hills. Some of our children went to camp there during the sixties. It has always been a very significant part of my life.
