Many of us look at our daily newspapers. A quick look at the headlines, the sports section, the weather page and the business section take me about 30 minutes. My financial adviser does an excellent job but he can’t control the markets. Last week the Dow Jones took a slide. If all of our long term investments are financial or materialistic we can be in for disappointments.
January, 2014 will soon be history. Have I or am I accomplishing what is satisfying. Income tax planning, preparation and filing is always a hurdle. A good tax person can be a big help. Eating, exercising and attitude can help make us feel better. They aid in keeping good physical and mental healthy.
A few years before I retired from teaching at North High School, earth science was added to our curriculum. None of us were anxious to teach it and only two of us had the recommended qualifications. There were about seven classes. I volunteered to take a full load of five. The last classes that I had taken in any earth sciences were more than 25 years earlier in graduate school. My reasoning was that preparation for teaching the course will require a lot of work. Why not teach it five times each day.
The Citizens Emergency Response Team (CERT) members are neither professional law enforcement officers, nor are they trained firefighters. They are first responders without credentials. They are citizens who are trained to respond in a limited capacity if bad things should happen. They are generally under the local law enforcement entity. Ours is under the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Department. The training is similar throughout the nation. It is taught by professionals in areas of likely need if that need arises.
This past year has generally been a good one for Norma and me. We took a trip to Texas in late March to spend a few days with Norma’s brother, Jon and his wife, Cheryl. During the summer we drive up to the Bemidji area several times. Camp Dellwater and Oak Hills Christian College and Bible Camp are both special to us. Sixty-five years ago I was a freshman at Oak Hills. Some of our children went to camp there during the sixties. It has always been a very significant part of my life.
Thanksgiving is here and Christmas is coming. Now is the time to be thinking and planning for 2014. How has the year gone physically, emotionally and spiritually in our relationships? Are there changes that can be made to improve in one or more of these areas? Thanksgiving and Christmas can be times of over spending or over committing physically and emotionally. The results can be stressful with regrets.
Thanksgiving day will soon be here. The day was initiated in America. That is one good reason to be thankful. We can give thanks for every night we sleep in a warm bed. It may be a single dwelling house, town house, condominium or apartment. This makes little difference. Food, clothes, fresh water and other basics of life are a blessing. The pilgrims planned a one or two day thanksgiving that turned out to be a weeklong celebration.
A street person may be successful if he gets a meal and bed at the Union Gospel Mission. A student is successful if he/she receives satisfactory or good grade. An athlete is happy if she/he makes the team. Winning is a team goal. A high school or college graduate is happy to find employment. The kind of job that they desired makes them feel even more successful. These are very important goals to achieve.
Our world is filled with laws, rules and regulations. It was the same way 2,000 years ago when our Lord was on earth. They also had legal people and religious leaders to sort out details. The Master Teacher in every way gave some answers and commandments. Legal scholars and religious leaders tried to trap Him.
Hopefully this has been a good week for you who read this column. It was especially busy and good for me. Sunday was church and Sunday school. Monday was jail ministry day. Tuesday is our food shelf and nursing home visitation day.
