In order to qualify for the Nordic ski racing state meet prior to this season, a team had to win its section race. Unlike in cross country running, the runner-up team from the section meet didn’t advance to state.

Irondale’s Watts brings home state gold

It has been a busy but successful winter for Irondale High School senior Mattie Watts. Her Nordic skiing prowess took her to Europe recently and last week earned her the biggest prize in prep skiing.
Watts won the state Nordic individual championship on Thursday at Giants Ridge in Biwabik. A 23-second lead following the freestyle leg of the competition gave Watts enough of a cushion that she survived a fall in the classic race.

Finishing second usually means coming up just shy of your goal. That wasn’t the case for the Mounds View High School girls Alpine ski team last week at the section meet, however.
The Mustangs ended up second in the team standings at the Section 7 meet but that won’t keep them from competing in this week’s state meet. There are only four sections for Alpine skiing and the top two teams in each section advance to state.
