The Simley High School wrestling team proved they were the No. 1 Class AA wrestling team in the state in dominating fashion last weekend.
The Spartans opened the Minnesota State Class AA Wrestling Team Tournament against No. 8-ranked Dawson-Boyd/Lac qui Parle/Montevideo United.
The Spartans flattened United by winning 10 of the 14 weight classes. The final score was 46-12.
All three Bulletin-area high schools sent competitors to the state wrestling tournament last weekend at Xcel Energy Center in downtown St. Paul. Here’s a look at how each fared at the biggest prep wrestling event of the season.

The Tartan High School Titans won the Section 4AAA wrestling title in dramatic fashion to qualify as a team for the Minnesota Class AAA State Wrestling Tournament
In their first match Thursday, Feb. 27, at the Xcel Center in St. Paul, Tartan ran into third-ranked Prior Lake, and the Lakers won convincingly by a score of 57-13.
Simley Spartans reclaim the Class AA wrestling title in dominant fashion. Downing Dawson-Boyd in the quarter finals 46-12, followed by a trouncing of last year’s state champion, Kasson Mantorville, they then turned in a solid performance against Scott West High School with a 33-21 victory.
All three Bulletin-area high schools will have competitors at this weekend’s state wrestling meet.
Mounds View leads the way with five entries while Irondale and St. Anthony Village are sending one each.
Three members of the Roseville Area High School wrestling team will close out their seasons by competing at the state wrestling tournament this weekend. All are juniors and each qualified for state by finishing second in their respective weight classes at the Section 4AAA meet on Saturday.
December Htoo, Tyler Graham and Isaac Schmaedeke will represent their team and school on Friday and maybe Saturday at the Xcel Energy Center.
In the Section 4AAA wrestling matches, held at Woodbury High School Feb. 15, the Tartan High School Titans went into the day as underdogs.
As the mats were being rolled up and the Titans were boarding the bus to head home, they had spent the day living up to their name and were riding high as the 2014 Section 4AAA champions.
For only the second time in the history of the Oakdale institution, Tartan was heading to the Minnesota State Class AAA Wrestling Tournament as a section champion.
The biggest day outside of the state tournament is approaching for the three Bulletin-area high school wrestling teams. They will converge on Champlin Park High School on Saturday for the Section 5AAA individual tournament.
